COVID-19, Housing, and Evictions

I can’t pay my rent because of COVID-19. What’s going to happen?

Remember: In Florida, your landlord is never allowed to evict you without a court order. If your landlord tells you to leave your home before a judge orders you to, you do not have to move out.

The CDC’s Eviction Moratorium has been invalidated and is no longer in effect. You can read the U.S. Supreme Court’s opinion for more information.

The property you live in may be subject to the CARES Act although most of the housing protections included in the CARES Act have expired. To find out whether you may benefit from CARES Act protections you can visit florida.evictionprotection.org.

If your landlord files an eviction case against you, contact an attorney immediately. You can find information about your local legal aid here:

Help Paying Rent and Utilities

The U.S. Department of Treasury’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) made $46.55 billion available nationally to help renters who were unable to pay rent or utilities including an allocation of $1.4 billion to help Florida renters.

“OUR Florida” was Florida’s federally-funded ERAP program. OUR Florida is no longer accepting applications for financial assistance.
