Securing a Student’s Right to Fair Testing Conditions

E.E. is a 17-year-old high school student with a visual disability, determined to take the SAT and chase their college dreams. When E.E. asked for extra time on the test, something they needed for a fair shot, the College Board said no. That decision put E.E.’s plans at risk, raising serious questions about fairness and opportunity.

Not willing to give up, E.E.’s family reached out to Disability Rights Florida. We jumped in to help, working side by side with E.E.’s parent to figure out the best way forward. Together, we got updated records from E.E.’s doctor and made sure the College Board understood exactly how the visual disability affected E.E. during testing.

With the right paperwork in hand, we sent everything to the College Board, this time with a powerful letter demanding a prompt review. We pushed for quick action so E.E. wouldn’t miss important deadlines or lose momentum on their college journey. Our message was clear: students like E.E. deserve the chance to show what they know, without unfair delays or obstacles.

The College Board listened. E.E. got the extra time they needed and took the SAT with the right support. Because of strong advocacy and teamwork, E.E. could show their true abilities, and keep moving forward toward a bright future.
