Sheltered Workshops

Did you know that it is legal to pay people with disabilities far less than the minimum wage?

A sheltered workshop is a place where people with disabilities work in segregated environments. Some sheltered workshops use a certificate called a 14C certificate, which allows a business to pay people with disabilities less than minimum wage. As of December 2023, 841 organizations applied for a 14c certificate. We believe 14c should be phased out in Florida and become a thing of the past.

Thousands of people with disabilities work in sheltered workshops, where they can be paid pennies per hour to perform menial tasks. Carrie, who used to work in a sheltered workshop, shares her story of how she got out of this system and now enjoys a thriving life.
