New Series Trailer: Accessibility Outside the Box

Thursday, April 28, 2022

We are happy to announce our new six-episode series we call, “Accessibility Outside the Box!”

Most of us are aware by now of what it means for something to be accessible: a ramp into a building for a person who uses a wheelchair, or a website that works for people who are blind and use screen reading software. This series is all about some aspects of accessibility you might not be aware of, but regardless often affect the daily activities of many people with disabilities. Without proper accessibility in place, lots of folks are left out of things like buying fashionable clothes, playing video games, going to concerts, taking a trip, or even participating in a research study.

Each week we’ll speak with an expert that can help us understand these issues. The first full episode drops on May 5th!

Episode Transcript

Keith Casebonne:  Hi, I’m Keith.

Maddie Crowley:  And I’m Maddie.

Keith:  We’re the hosts of You First, the Disability Rights Florida Podcast, and we’re happy to announce our upcoming six-episode series we call, “Accessibility Outside the Box”!

Maddie:  Most of us are aware by now of what it means for something to be accessible: a ramp into a building for a person who uses a wheelchair, or a website that works for people who are blind and use screen reading software.

Keith:  But this series is all about some aspects of accessibility you might not be aware of, but regardless often affect the daily activities of many people with disabilities.

Maddie:  Without proper accessibility in place, lots of folks are left out of things like buying fashionable clothes, playing video games, going to concerts, taking a trip, or even participating in a research study.

Keith:  Each week we’ll speak with an expert that can help us understand these issues. Here’s a quick preview of some of what they’ll have to say!

Guest 1:  So that's like a solid, tangible example of how people's attitudes can change over time in terms of being an advocate and ally for disability and accessibility.

Guest 2:  We should not be explaining why we're making places accessible. We should be explaining why they are not accessible.

Guest 3:  We got together at least 20 mayors of beach communities who wanted to learn more about this issue, wanted to bring Mobi Mats to their city or community, and just weren't sure how to get through all that red tape.

Guest 4:  That lack of understanding and lack of empathy, I think, really upset me in that moment.

Guest 5:  And so we put a call out for composers to focus on particularly the theme of vulnerability as it relates to their experiences in the concert hall.

Maddie:  Please join us on May 5 for our first episode, Travel & Vacationing, then each Thursday after that for five more great episodes.

Keith:  Please make sure to subscribe to the You First Podcast to be alerted when each episode drops. We’re on Apple Podcast, Spotify, YouTube, and almost anywhere you get podcasts.

Maddie:  And for more information, visit DisabilityRightsFlorida.org/Podcast. We hope you’ll join us!
