Accessible Walkway Offers Reassurance and Independence

She wears a yellow blouse and tan pantsCarmina Vicidomini is a woman with mobility impairments who lives in a condominium in Naples, Florida. Ms. Vicidomini contacted Disability Rights Florida (DRF) because she was having difficulty accessing her home. Ms. Vicidomini needed an assigned parking space close to her condominium unit as well as handrails and a non-slip coating along an inclined common area walkway. Our staff made requests for reasonable accommodation and modification to Ms. Vicidomini’s condominium association, and we contacted the Center for Independent Living of Broward to help pay for the cost of the materials and labor needed to install the accessible walkway. Ms. Vicidomini’s condominium association approved the accommodation and modification, and the Center for Independent Living of Broward funded the modifications in full. DRF and the Center for Independent Living of Broward worked closely together to ensure that the work was done by a licensed contractor and in a way that ensured that Ms. Vicidomini had an accessible route to her home. Ms. Vicidomini now has an assigned parking space close to her home and has a walkway with two handrails and a non-slip surface to safely access her home. DRF and the Center for Independent Living of Broward hope that the handrails and non-slip surface will improve accessibility for Ms. Vicidomini and other residents and visitors to the condominium community.
