DRF Senior Public Policy Analyst Olivia Babis speaking at the SAFE Through Medicare Act event.
Regardless of the state or type of disaster, whenever a natural disaster occurs seniors and people with disabilities remain the most vulnerable to these deadly threats. Many are unable to leave their homes and are at additional risk when electric and water services are interrupted. They may be reliant on ventilators, oxygen tanks, or have life-saving medications that must be kept refrigerated. These individuals are often on fixed incomes and unable to afford whole home backup batteries, generators, portable air conditioning units, or other devices and equipment that would allow them to stay alive until help arrives. Disability Rights Florida applauds the introduction of the SAFE Through Medicare Act and supports these efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of Medicare recipients.
