Are You Prepared for an Emergency? Brochure

Emergency Preparedness for People with Access and Functional Needs

It is critical that all residents have a plan in case of disasters. It is even more important for people with access and functional needs to take the proper steps to prepare themselves in the event of a disaster or other emergency.

Build your family emergency plan today at FloridaDisaster.org/GetAPlan.

How do I register for the Special Needs Registry?

The Special Needs Registry is kept by the Florida Department of Health. It helps emergency workers locate individuals and understand each person’s unique needs. Once you register, your county will contact you to discuss your individual sheltering needs. Registration can be found at SNR.FLHealthResponse.com

What services does my county offer?

Whether you are on the Special Needs Registry or not, your county may offer helpful services, such as access to a special needs shelter or transportation from your home to a shelter. Ask your county’s Emergency Management Division representative for details. For contact information, visit FloridaDisaster.org/counties

What happens to my pet or service animal?

People who have pets must have a plan during a disaster that includes those pets. The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act of 2006 requires that state and local emergency plans address the needs of individuals with pets. Service animals are not pets and all shelters must allow service animals.

What should I keep in my emergency kit?

When a disaster strikes, it is likely you will not have time to shop for essential items. That is why it is critical that every household assemble an emergency kit ahead of time and keep it current. A list of basic items to include in your emergency kit can be found at FloridaDisaster.org/PlanPrepare/hurricane-supply-checklist
