Protecting Access to Supported Living Services
Michelle Murrey is a 50-year-old woman with cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, neurological conditions, anxiety, and other physical challenges. She has her own apartment with paid support and funding to join a day program. Living on her own means everything to Michelle, but she needs the right help to stay safe. Because of her balance issues, she’s at risk of falling if left alone.
Michelle’s family asked the Agency for Persons with Disabilities for more Supported Living and Personal Support hours. Her parents are in their 80s, and her mom’s recent serious medical diagnosis made it even more urgent to get extra help while they could still advocate for her. The goal was clear: help Michelle stay safe in her apartment full-time. But for five months, the request went unanswered. On top of that, they found out Michelle’s transportation funding was taken away, making it even harder for her to stick to her routine and take part in services.
When the request was only partially approved, Disability Rights Florida stepped in. We teamed up with Michelle’s parents and support coordinator to review what happened and break down what needed to be done next. The advocate explained the appeal process, helped gather all the paperwork, and made sure nothing was missed when asking for a fair hearing or special assistance. With this support, Michelle’s case had the best shot at getting a fair review.
Thanks to this advocacy, Michelle got the full approval she needed for services and support. Now she can keep living on her own and safely attend her day program. Michelle’s parents were grateful for the outcome and the support received. Disability Rights Florida will always be there if Michelle needs help again.
